Cape Dorset, 2009

Our trip to Cape Dorset, January 2009.  The weather was cold, -40 C, and quite windy.

Days were short, the sun was low on the horizon for the 6 hours between sunrise and sunset.

Marvin and Rick

Arriving in the north, at the Iqaluit airport. This was day 2 of travel, the first day the plane turned back due to bad weather.

Modern Life

A woman wearing a traditional amautik, carrying her child on her back, chats on a cell phone.

Snow Machines

One snow machine towing another from the container, used as a shed. This snow machine has "reverse".

Walking in the cold

Cold and windy day, with the snow blowing off the rocks, the roads are hard backed snow on top of gravel.

Cold

Late in the day approaching dusk, the snow blows across the sky.

Snowy Day

The weather was cold, this was mostly blowing snow, late in the day.

Sculpture Studio

The sculptors work out of doors, year round, this is a typical arrangement.

Dog Team

A traditional sled dog team, lives outdoors year round, this was feeding time so ravens were circling around, waiting to steal a scrap of food.

The larger boat is the size that's used to bring stone from the quarry. Smaller boats such as these are used for walrus hunting.

Walking to the Airport

Last day in town, hoping that the weather clears enough for flights to leave.

Arriving in Iqaluit

There was a clear blue sky, the temperature was -32.
